In the ancient world, juniper was used to disinfect wounds and boost bile flow, and also as a diuretic, while in medieval times, it became one of the most valuable medicinal plants. The tree’s branches continue to this day to be used for traditional wintertime smoking, both in the home and in the stables.

Appenzeller Alpenbitter is a family owned company with tradition since 1902. Emil Ebneter, founder of today’s Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG, not only gave the company valuable recipes, he also passed on a set of values that continue to be maintained, and which form the basis of the company’s success. The family-owned company has remained true to its tradition and continues to be an independent Swiss company.
